United Nations World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) Johannesburg August 26 to September 4, 2002.

PositionAnnouncements

It has been ten years since the historic "Earth Summit," the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. The World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), unofficially known as Rio+10, brings together governments, UN agencies, civil society organisations, multilateral financial institutions and business to assess global change since 1992. Governments will review their achievements (or failures) in supporting the Rio agreements on sustainable development, biodiversity and climate change.

In a world where food, water, shelter, sanitation, energy, and health services are less secure for the majority of the world's population than they were just ten years ago, the issues under debate at the WSSD are more crucial than ever. For African women, the concept of sustainable development, as framed in the WSSD, positions development perspectives through globalisation. This is problematic because research has emerged that women have experienced globalisation negatively, There is increased feminisation of poverty. The privatisation of social services has increased, rather than decreased, women's work as more African people fall through the social safety nets. Linked to the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD), the framework offers market-oriented economies that are not compatible with the protection of women's rights and do not promote gender equality in Africa. The WSSD must promote sustainable development that incorporates human development and gender equality into its definition and implementation.
