Men for Gender Equality Now--MEGEN project: post election violence activities/Men for Gender Equality Now--MEGEN (Hommes pour l'Egalite des Genres Maintenant): activites relatives a la violence post-electorale.

PositionNews From FEMNET Secretariat/ NOUVELLES DU SECRETARIAT DE FEMNET

Since January 2008, following the disputed presidential elections outcome violence engulfed most parts of Kenya, with over 1,500 people losing their lives, another over 500,000 displaced and thousands traumatized and injured. Sadly, women and children continued to bear the worst burden and consequences, particularly sexual violence, with reports of public gang rapes. During this period, Men for Gender Equality Now (MEGEN) conducted counseling sessions on GBV sensitization in three areas in Nairobi: Tigoni, Mathare and Huruma. With support from CIDA/GESP and the Heinrich Boll Foundation, MEGEN also organized community dialogue forums with the main objective being to promote reconciliation and peaceful coexistence within and amongst warring communities. The forums provided a platform for open communication where people were encouraged to vent out their anger and then identify ways of preventing violence in future. Short, mid and long term home grown peace programmes to curb violence were developed. For more updates and/or queries, send an email to mentomen@ femnet.or.ke
