Kenyan women lose on East African Community Assembly.

PositionNews in Brief

The recent elections of members to the East African Community Assembly in Uganda and Tanzania have registered tremendous success for women. The Ugandan Parliament moved beyond the traditional one-third slot constitutionally given to women, to 1:1 male to female regional representation. The results of the elections were affirmation of the need for both men and women to join hands in the struggle for regional integration. Tanzanians on the other hand, not only committed themselves to quotas to boast women's representation in parliament and local authorities since the 70's, but raised those quotas through the decades. In contrast Kenya's ruling political party KANU refused to nominate enough women to meet the quota of three at the Arusha assembly. Kenyan women will need to come together and demand that their government grant them their right to participate in politics and all decision-making processes.
