The Gender and Development Office (GEO) of the International Council for Adult Education (ICAE) held a consultative meeting with GEO-team members during the period 26-28 June 2008 in Montevideo (ICAE headquarters), Uruguay. This three-day meeting was attended by 40 feminists from 19 different countries drawn from five global regions: Africa (Egypt, Senegal, Tanzania, Zambia); Asia/Pacific (Australia, India, Indonesia, Philippines); Latin America/ Caribbean (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Jamaica, Mexico, Uruguay); Middle-East (Lebanon); Europe (Moldova, Spain, UK). FEMNET was represented by its board member, Madam Sara Longwe from Zambia.

The meeting was aimed at reflecting and discussing the world's political context and the different advocacy spaces available in the struggle for achievement of women's empowerment. The meeting further reflected on GEO's work and came up with strategies for engendering the sixth International Conference on Adult Education (CONFINTEA VI), which will be held in Brazil in July 2009. CONFINTEA is a UNESCO global conference that is held after 12 years.

Outcome from the meeting

* Participants managed to move forward in preparing GEO-Team members towards CONFINTEA VI and its regional preparatory conferences, The African prep-com will be held in Nairobi, 5-11 November 2008.

* A work plan with different tasks was drawn up in order to ensure that gender mainstreaming takes place at the different regional conferences as well as in their strategic outcome documents.

* A taskforce was formed to facilitate gender mainstreaming of the ICAE strategic document to be used.
